Stretchy Robot

For previous Toon Boom rigs, I've experimented with rigs that have limbs that can swap between FK, IK and curved deformers, but still have envelope deformers built into each part of the limb. For this robot, I wanted to expand more on this with the design - I found when animating, I tended to use curved deformers less, so I wanted a design that could have very stretchy arms and legs for more exaggerated actions.

This golden robot was designed in Photoshop and rigged in Toon Boom Harmony.

Rig Highlights:

  • Due to the ball joints on the design, the limbs are able to deformer very freely when using the curved deformer in each limb.

  • The gears in the body can rotate evenly with a Master Controller. Even when the body is squashed or deformed, the rotation will stay rotating evenly because the scale and rotation are controlled by different pegs.

This short exercise was to test the curve deformers for the arms and legs, showing how far the rig's deformers can be pushed.
